Frozen Pipe Prevention: Reminders

As the temperature drops below freezing, be mindful of these important reminders to help reduce the risk of frozen pipes.

The days of lounging out on the patio and around the pool are a distant memory when the calendar approaches the end of January. Single digit and even subzero temperatures are not an uncommon occurrence at this point in the season. This bitter cold can lead to one of the winter's familiar causes of property damage: frozen pipes. When pipes become frozen, and eventually thaw, there is a strong likelihood for the pipe to split, thus resulting in water damage to your home or commercial property. Here are a few important reminders as to how you can prevent your property's pipes from freezing.

• Remove hoses from exterior water spickets and turn off the water supply going to them.
• Keep thermostats at a consistent, warm temperature especially during an extreme cold snap.
• In the case of a secondary or unoccupied property, make sure the property is properly winterized.
• Open cupboard or cabinet doors under sinks, particularly those located on an exterior wall, to allow warm air to reach the supply lines to the sink.
• During a cold snap, allow a slow drip from faucets to prevent water from freezing.
• Garage doors should be kept closed as much as possible, especially if the garage contains water supply lines.
• Make sure pipes in crawlspaces or particularly cold areas are properly insulated.
• When leaving your home or property for a period, make arrangements with a friend, neighbor, or relative to make regular checks to ensure no damage has occurred within the space.
