PREPARATION & PROTECTION: During the restoration process of fire, water, smoke, mold, biohazard or sewer damage, often times demolition of affected building materials is necessary to properly mitigate the affected areas. The professionals at SERVPRO of Windham & Windsor Counties are able to inspect and determine which areas will require demolition or removal. In these situations, it is equally as important to cover and protect areas not affected, so they are not damaged during demolition.  In these cases, SERVPRO of Windham & Windsor Counties technicians will carefully cover floors, flat surfaces, furniture, cabinets, countertops and other parts of the property prior to demolition. Following demolition, a thorough cleanup of the work area is performed and at the conclusion of the project, the coverings are removed.

A window decal that says SERVPRO Certified Cleaned Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned

Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned is a cleaning and disinfecting program that SERVPRO offers to commercial locations to address the current COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic has changed what it means to be clean and being open for business is just the beginning of everyone’s new journey forward. Employees may be hesitant to return to work, and customers may wonder whether the businesses they visit are safe. If a building or structure is sanitized and disinfected as part of the CSC program, a window decal shield will be left there, as well as a separate window decal which should be dated by the franchise to let everyone know when it was last sanitized and disinfected. This can be scheduled as a one time or recurring service. This is a level of clean that goes way beyond janitorial or carpet cleaning, it is proactive viral pathogen cleaning. Beyond fire and water, SERVPRO professionals are trained and experienced in bio hazard decontamination. When businesses choose SERVPRO, their employees, customers, and community can rest assured that they have selected a “higher standard of clean.”

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets and tables. Other spaces mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces include:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices

  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and Rugs

Generator Safety

2/10/2020 (Permalink)

power lines, white bolt of lightning in the distance, soft edges on photo with black background During a power outage the most important thing is to know how to keep you and your loved ones safe!

Generators can be very helpful to have on hand in the event of a power outage during severe weather. Follow these steps from the American Red Cross to ensure safe handling of your generator:

  • To avoid electrocution, keep your generator dry and do not use in wet conditions (i.e. a flood). Have it running on a dry, flat surface under a shelter such as a canopy-like structure (i.e. a tarp supported by poles). Do not touch the generator if your hands are wet.
  • Never run a generator inside your home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area. The same goes for grills, camp stoves, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices.
  • Using fans or opening your doors and windows won’t prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in your home. CO can’t be smelled or seen so it is critical when running a generator to use caution to prevent exposure. If you start to feel sick, weak or dizzy while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.
  • Install CO alarms on every level in your home in central locations and outside sleeping areas. These will provide early warnings of rising CO levels.

Excessive mold in your commercial property is a hazard to both workers and clients

1/8/2020 (Permalink)

side by side pictures of inside an air duct- on left, duct is dirty, on right, duct is clean. green background Poor maintenance of your HVAC system can turn your air conditioning into a breeding ground for mold.

Excessive mold in your commercial property is unpleasant, and it can be unsightly. Once it’s found, mold removal services can address the problem — but there are also ways you can prevent fungal growths before they form. Below is a brief guide that discusses a few crucial facts about mold that business owners should know.

How Does Mold Form in an Office Building?

Mold can grow on any surface if organic matter like food or oil from the skin is present. Fungi need water and warmth to grow, so they often thrive wherever moisture is present, including drywall, carpeting, clothing, and wood. Your building’s HVAC system is necessary for maintaining a comfortable temperature and humidity, but poor maintenance can turn your air conditioning into a breeding ground for mold. If fungus is present inside the HVAC system, the spores produced by the mold will spread throughout the building through the air ducts.

How Do You Prevent Mold From Forming?

Since fungal growths thrive in moist environments, try to eliminate all potential water sources. For instance, repair any leaky plumbing and seek mold remediation services immediately after a flood. Another way to prevent mold is to schedule regular HVAC cleanings to keep the system from breeding and spreading spores.

If your commercial property needs mold removal services, don’t hesitate to reach out our expert team here at SERVPRO of Windham & Windsor Counties. Since 1978, this disaster recovery company has helped residents throughout Windham & Windsor Counties, Vermont restore their properties. Our staff of experienced professionals specializes in everything from fire damage repair to carpet cleaning.

SERVPRO of Windham & Windsor Counties Marketing Team Supporting Community Events

SERVPRO’s original company headquarters was located in Sacramento, California when it was launched in 1967 by Ted and Doris Isaacson as a painting business. The Isaacson’s soon decided to transform the company into a cleaning and restoration company. The company quickly grew and sold its first franchise in 1969. Over the years, the company continued to grow and headquarters were relocated to Gallatin, Tennessee in 1988. The reason for this move was a great strategy as it placed the company’s headquarters within 600 miles of 50% of the U.S. SERVPRO Corporate was quickly noticed for their involvement within the community and in 1991, was awarded the title of “Small Business of the Year” by the Nashville Business Journal!

  2. Be sure the ashes are cool before placing them into a metal container and keep the ashes away from your home, garage and porch.
  3. Keep any flammable items at least three feet away from the open flames.

Wilmington's Fire Damage Experts Talk About Different Cleaning Chemicals Used During Restoration

When something burns on your Wilmington property, the blaze not only can burn your building materials and contents, but the smoke can cause soot residues and soils to exist on indoor surfaces. One major part of any fire damage project is cleaning and soot removal. When a fire ignites inside a building, it often burns different fuels creating a combination of different types of smoke and soot residues. As the various types of partially combusted particles circulate through your home, they can come into contact with several different types of surfaces. When mitigating fire damage, our highly trained SERVPRO team knows that different techniques and chemicals must be used to remove soot from the various surfaces inside your home.
We provide fast 24/7 service so that we can begin working on restoring your home as soon as possible. Our SERVPRO technicians are located in the region so that we can show up quickly after we receive your fire damage call in Wilmington. As soon as we arrive, we inspect your home to determine where the problems occurred and how severe the issues are. Our estimators come to your residence equipped with a testing kit so that we can figure out what we can restore and what we think must be replaced. We have inside the testing kit a variety of chemicals so that we can see which techniques and detergents will work best for certain surfaces.
Once we figure out what exactly needs to be done, we comprise an initial estimate for you and your insurance adjuster. After receiving work authorization, we start the restoration process using the industry's most advanced technology. We have at our disposal a variety of chemicals that we can use to clean soot that affects different surfaces.
For most situations, we use a general purpose detergent that can clean soils off of most surfaces. For heavy soot, we often utilize a heavy-duty degreaser as long as the surface is durable. When cleaning materials that are made out of stone and mortar we can use a strong acid cleaner as a last resort. If you ever have a fire break out inside your house, call SERVPRO of Windham & Windsor Counties at (802) 674-8004 24/7.
